We are the Trade Unions! We’re not afraid of the injunction!

“The future isn’t beneath us. It’s in the hands of workers, it’s in our communities. It’s wind, solar and tidal power. In our collective, organised power.” Chris Baugh PCS

We joined the rally of trade unions against fracking in Lancashire on 9th June. The event was an important show of resolve, defiance and solidarity coming just eight days after Cuadrilla secured an injunction against protests at Preston New Road.

It also came on the day that we heard that Jim Ratcliffe, Chairman and Chief Executive of INEOS –the biggest player in the UK fracking industry- was to be knighted.

We were happy to take our ‘One Million Climate Jobs’ banner and it joined the banners of the PCS, the NUT and numerous trade councils.

The day featured a march to the gate of the frack site for photos, speeches and chants followed by music, speakers and a delicious lunch at Maple Farm.

Speakers included Chris Baugh from the PCS, Tina Rothery from the Nanas and Martin Empson from the Campaign Against Climate Change Trade Union group, ably compered by Clara Paillard of the PCS.

There were many familiar faces at the event but also many people who were attending Preston New Road for the first time.  All learned from sharing stories and experiences, and from reading information such as the Campaign Against Climate Change’s new leaflet, ‘Why Workers Should Oppose Fracking’ and the PCS’ new booklet, ‘There is an alternative to fracking: Building a climate jobs plan for Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre’.

This booklet had recently featured in Chris Baugh’s excellent guest blog for Labour Energy, just three days before the event.

The event was part of the three-month United Resistance campaign and looked ahead to future resistance over the summer as Cuadrilla intends to complete its first frack since 2011.

On June 9th the trade unions said clearly:  We stand with you. There is an alternative. We are not afraid. We will return.
