A festive red line one year after Paris, anti-fracking carols and more in festive double action

Across the country groups will be marking the anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement with actions on Saturday 10th December.

There will be a seasonal theme connecting the climate threat to Santa’s home, the North Pole, to the UK Government’s backtracking on climate change, represented by unwanted presents.

Read more about the Campaign Against Climate Change’s day of action  which builds on the ‘Going Backwards’ events that took place across the country during May.

Santa’s Unwanted Presents – 11.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m., various locations around Huddersfield Town Centre

Please join us to sing a specially-adapted Christmas carol around town (Good old Santa Claus looked out (to tune of Good King Wencelas)) and create a little festive visual play about ‘Santa’s Unwanted Presents’ depicting this story:

Santa was glum. His home, the North Pole was melting from climate change. One year ago world leaders gave him the best present ever – a deal to stop climate change! Santa landed in Britain and opened his present. The wrapping paper was beautiful. But inside was….Fracking! Airport expansion! New opencast coal mines! Cuts to renewable energy and home insulation! What a disappointment! This Christmas, let’s demand that Santa gets more than unwanted presents wrapped in shiny paper. Let’s give him actions as well as words to save his home!

Please join us to sing carols, create street theatre, hold the ‘The Ice is melting’ red line or help with leafleting and talking to passers-by.

Please wear red and come in your festive hats, reindeer antlers, tinsel etc.

“Barclays – Give Yorkshire the Best Present: A Frack-Free Christmas and New Year”, assembling from 10.20 a.m. for 10.30 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. action

We’ll also spend one hour outside Barclays Bank (17 Market Place, HD1 2AA) to protest against Third Energy’s plans (Barclays is 97% owner of Third Energy) to frack Ryedale  . Our message to them will be: “Barclays – Give Yorkshire the Best Present: A Frack-Free Christmas and New Year”.

We’ll be singing anti-fracking Christmas carols (Barclays anti-fracking carols), writing Christmas cards to Barclays, holding the red line and opening Barclays/Third Energy’s unwanted presents – containing water pollution, climate change, traffic congestion and other side-effects of fracking.

Please wear red and come in your festive hats, reindeer antlers, tinsel etc.

Please join us for all or part of the event. We will be outside Barclays in Market Place from 10.30am-11.30am (assembling from 10.20 a.m.) and around town with the ‘Santa’s Unwanted Presents’ show from 11.30a.m. – 12.30p.m.

After this action, please join us for a festive coffee in the Coffeevolution basement from shortly after 12.30 p.m.

As always, please feel free to turn up but if you’d like to be kept informed of any changes or cancellations, please email us your mobile phone number by Thursday 8th December. As we’ll be moving around for the Santa’s Unwanted Presents Show, it won’t be possible to tell you the exact location of where we’ll be from 11.30a.m. – 12.30p.m. Please meet with us in Market Place by 11.20 a.m.

There’s excellent analysis of the issues involved, written shortly before the COP 22 Marrakesh climate talks in November 2016, in Asad Rehman’s ‘Are we keeping our promises on climate? UK and world update’.
