2nd-6th February 2015 ‘Cold Homes Week’
This is an initiative by the Energy Bill Revolution campaign to raise awareness of fuel poverty and to promote their campaign for improved energy efficiency funded by carbon taxes.
Such a programme would create 100,000 jobs, save lives and reduce costs to the NHS. It would also reduce carbon emissions. You can read more about the campaign here http://www.energybillrevolution.org/whats-the-campaign/ There is coverage of our Energy Bill Revolution campaigning in 2013 here https://kirkleescampaignagainstclimatechange.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/fuel-poverty-takes-centre-stage-in-snowy-huddersfield/
It is estimated that one in ten households live in fuel poverty and that between six and nine thousand people died as a result of living in a cold home last winter. https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/sam-lundharket/possession-of-power-deprivatising-energy
There will be a number of events locally to connect with ‘Cold Homes Week’.
On Thursday 5th February, the recently formed Compass group (at the Red and Green Club in Milnsbridge) will be discussing climate change and acknowledging Cold Homes Week. The event starts at 7.30pm. PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AT MILNSBRIDGE LIBERAL CLUB, 54 GEORGE STREET
At 10am on Friday 6th February, Holmfirth Transition Town will run one of its regular ‘Affordable Warmth’ advice sessions at Holmfirth library.
During Cold Homes Week, Kirklees Campaign against Climate Change will be addressing fuel poverty and its solutions. We will be thanking all four Kirklees MPs (Jason McCartney, Simon Reevell, Barry Sheerman and Mike Wood) for supporting the Energy Bill Revolution campaign already.
On the morning of Saturday 7th February, we will be promoting another initiative launched by Fuel Poverty Action to raise awareness of cold homes, fuel poverty and energy injustice. We will be asking MPs and fellow citizens to support the Energy Bill of Rights (see Fuel Poverty Action Energy Bill of Rights sign up) and the Early Day Motion promoting it, EDM 395. You can read the text of it here http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2014-15/395. Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman is one of its signatories.
At the moment this could take the form of street actions, meetings with MPs or a combination of the two. We will confirm this nearer the time. If you would like to be informed of any cancellations or changes, please email us your mobile number by 4th February.
