Following our rail tour on Saturday 15th November, we’ve written open letters to Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney and Dewsbury MP Simon Reevell.
The letters set out our opposition to the proposals contained in the Department for Transport and Rail North consultation for the Northern and TransPennine Express rail franchises.
In particular, we call on the Government to withdraw planned fare rises, service and timetable cuts, driver-only operation, the sacking of train guards/ conductors, station de-staffing and ticket office closures.
One of activities on the tour was to invite Colne Valley and Dewsbury constituents to record initial responses to the proposals. The open letters use these responses to identify six threats in the proposals:
1) Household budgets
2) Social inclusion
3) Integrated local and regional public transport
4) Passenger safety
5) Passenger security
6) A shared green future
Local MPs Barry Sheerman and Mike Wood have already signed EDM 174 condemning the proposals.
We recognise that some MPs might not engage with EDM’s on principle. Consequently, we have asked Jason McCartney and Simon Reevell MPs by early December to:
- raise our concerns with the Government and Rail North AND
- for publication on our website, state their position on these proposals for fare rises, service and timetable cuts, driver-only operation, the sacking of train guards/ conductors, station de-staffing and ticket office closures.
