Kirklees MPs Barry Sheerman and Mike Wood have supported a petition for ‘100% clean energy’ by 2050.
The Avaaz 100% clean petition was signed by 2.2 million people worldwide in the lead-up to the UN Climate Summit in New York last month. Almost nine hundred of those signatories lived within 15 kilometres of Huddersfield Town Centre.
The petition, which is addressed “To national, local, and international leaders” states, “Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love. We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees celsius, by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”.
Last month, sixty people gathered at the ‘Vigil for Climate Safety’ in St George’s Square, Huddersfield. They promoted the Avaaz petition to the public. On Tuesday 22nd September, the day of the Climate Summit, Kirklees Campaign Against Climate Change presented all four Kirklees MPs and the leaders of the five Kirklees Council party groupings with the petition.
Iain Solanki-Willats from Kirklees Campaign Against Climate Change says, “We are delighted that Barry Sheerman and Mike Wood have supported the ‘100% Clean’ petition. They have shown real leadership on this matter.”
“The decisions that we make nationally and internationally in the next few years will determine whether we shift successfully to 100% clean energy by 2050. 2015 will be a critical year: we all need to demand truly green policies at the general election and a fair and far-reaching international climate deal in Paris.”
