Kirklees MPs and local councillors respond to Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition

Vigil for the climate (2)

Avaaz have created a petition to local and national leaders calling for 100% clean energy by 2050. The Avaaz 100% clean petition will be presented during the Climate Summit in New York this week but is also intended to be delivered to representatives in areas around the world.

We distributed fliers at Huddersfield’s Vigil for Climate Safety calling on fellow citizens to support it. As of 22nd September, 2.1 million people had supported the petition world-wide including 851 people within 15 kilometres of the centre of Huddersfield.

Tomorrow the petition will be delivered to all four Kirklees MPs and to the leaders of all five of the party groupings in Kirklees Council. We have asked for a response from these representatives by 3rd October and will be posting these on our website.

(Please note: full text of letter sent to Kirklees MPs/ party groupings on Kirklees Council follows this record of the responses we have received from local elected representatives.

Each recipient was asked to state whether they agreed or did not agree with the entire wording of the Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition in particular that we need to “urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”.)

Dear MPs and local councillors,

“Rising to the challenge of climate change is a big idea for next year. In 2014, we must turn the greatest collective challenge facing humankind today – climate change – into the greatest opportunity for common progress towards a sustainable future. Next year is the year for climate action.”   Ban Ki Moon. http://www.rtcc.org/2013/12/11/ban-ki-moon-leaders-must-bring-solutions-to-2014-climate-summit/

See also http://www.un.org/climatechange/summit/2013/12/big-idea-2014-the-year-for-climate-action-by-ban-ki-moon/

Today, on 23rd September the Climate Summit opens at the United Nations in New York. Leaders from around the world including the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron will be attending. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has called on leaders to come to the summit with national pledges for climate action in advance of international deal on climate change in Paris in 2015. You can read about the Climate Summit on http://www.un.org/climatechange/summit/ .

In the lead up to the Climate Summit people from around the world have signed a petition for 100% Clean Energy by 2050 (see http://avaaz.org/100_clean) – to be presented at the Climate Summit and to local representatives. We would like to present you with the enclosed document containing the full text of the petition. The Avaaz petition also shows that, as of 22nd September, the petition was supported by 2.14 million people world-wide and 851 people within 15 kilometres of St George’s Square, Huddersfield. (Please excuse the inexplicable typo of ‘St George’s’ Square’.)

Clearly there are strong views on this subject in the Kirklees area. On Friday 19th September over sixty people attended the Climate Safety Vigil in St George’s Square, Huddersfield. People from Kirklees also attended People’s Climate March events in London, Manchester and Edinburgh on Sunday 21st September. You can read about these events on the Kirklees Campaign Against Climate Change website https://kirkleescampaignagainstclimatechange.wordpress.com/

MPs:

The role of MPs is critical in delivering national action on climate change and we are conscious that any of the three main parties could be a party of government in 2015. Therefore, we would ask you to reply to us- in writing or by email with one of the following replies.

Either:I agree with the entire wording of the Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition http://avaaz.org/100_clean in particular that we need to “urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”

ORI do not agree with the entire wording of Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition http://avaaz.org/100_clean in particular that we need to “urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”

We’d be delighted to read any explanation or elaboration that you may wish to add to your reply but would be grateful if, at some point in your message one of the above statements is copied verbatim.

Local councillors:

The role of councillors is critical in delivering practical action on climate change – and in the process creating jobs, improving energy security, reducing consumer bills and improving health and quality of life. All Kirklees councillors should be proud of Kirklees council’s track record on this. We have delivered this to the leaders of each party grouping in Kirklees Council. We would ask you to share this petition with the rest of your party grouping and to reply to us- in writing or by email with one of the following replies.

Either: :As a party grouping of (Conservative, Green, Independent, Labour, Lib Dem: please state) Kirklees councillors, we agree with the entire wording of the Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition http://avaaz.org/100_clean in particular that we need to “urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”

OR :As a party grouping of (Conservative, Green, Independent, Labour, Lib Dem: please state) Kirklees councillors, we do not agree with the entire wording of Avaaz ‘100% clean’ petition http://avaaz.org/100_clean in particular that we need to “urgently forge global, national and local agreements and realistic plans, to rapidly and fairly shift our societies and economies to be powered by 100% clean energy by 2050”

We’d be delighted to read any explanation or elaboration that you may wish to add to your reply but would be grateful if, at some point in your message one of the above statements is copied verbatim.

In the event of your party group being unable or unwilling to provide a party group response, we would be grateful if you could ask individual councillors to respond to us with their individual responses- replacing ‘As a party grouping of Kirklees councillors we’ with ‘I’. We will email you a copy of this letter and the petition in order that you can easily share it with colleagues.

We will publish responses we receive on our website. Please could you reply to us within the next ten days ie by Friday 3rd October?

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Tim Padmore
